Since 1990, the iHeartRadio Much Music Video Awards have been celebrating the best in Canadian music and international artists. The annual show has even been responsible for helping launch some pretty impressive careers. This year, while the intersection at Queen and John in Toronto was shut down once again for the biggest block party in the world, fans showered their fave musicians and personalities with love, and got it right back, and then some.

The night was hosted by Canadian pop star Alessia Cara and DNCE frontman Joe Jonas, who this year became the first artist to host the show twice (Jonas previously made history as the first celebrity host in 2009 when he hit the MMVAs with his brothers Nick and Kevin). The two hour show was a non-stop celebration of the year’s biggest artists, packed with 10 performers and 37 presenters.

International superstars Lorde and Imagine Dragons returned for their second performance, with rappers Iggy Azalea and Post Malone making their MMVA debut along with songwriter turned singer Julia Michaels. Former One Direction member Niall Horan performed his first two solo singles “This Town” and “Slow Hands,” to an enraptured audience, while Camila Cabello opened the show as a solo artist, having closed last year’s MMVAs with her former band, Fifth Harmony. Canadian hip hop artist Jazz Cartier and Hamilton rockers Arkells made their MMVA debuts on stage, while Jonas pulled double duty as host and performer, bringing his high energy showmanship to his performance with his band DNCE.

There was no shortage of buzzworthy moments, including wild red carpet arrivals, girl power messages, and a whole lotta love for Canada.

Fierce Fashion

The high temperatures weren’t the only thing heating up the red carpet. Canadian fashion icons Alessia Cara, Lilly Singh and Shay Mitchell all stunned on the red carpet along with model Martha Hunt and actors Keke Palmer and Bea Miller. Check out Much for the full red carpet gallery.

Outrageous Entrances

Keeping with tradition, the annual show featured no shortage of outrageous red carpet entrances, with Marianas Trench arriving covered in balloons. Lead singer Josh Ramsay arrived Marilyn Monroe-style, emerging from a cake in spectacular fashion.

An American Invasion

Maybe it’s all the great music coming out of the US right now or maybe it’s all the Americans looking for Canadian passports, but there was no shortage of American talent at this year’s MMVAs. Former Fifth Harmony member Camila Cabello opened the show with a theatrical performance of her first two singles, “Crying In The Club” and “I Have Questions.” Las Vegas rockers Imagine Dragons returned to the MMVAs for the first time since 2014, with rapper Post Malone and songwriter turned singer Julia Michaels both making their debut performances.

So much love In The Air

YouTuber Lilly Singh brought her squad and her famous positivity onto the red carpet, arriving in a t-shirt that read ‘Love Thy Sister’ with a crew of young girls and women wearing matching shirts. MMVA winners A Tribe Called Red, YouTuber Tyler Oakley, musician Serena Ryder and 13 Reasons Why star Brandon Flynn all used their stage time to preach acceptance for all, with the mood of the show kept light and full of love.

Everybody Wants To Be A Canadian

From host Joe Jonas wishing Canada an early happy birthday (as well as reminding everyone it will soon be legal to smoke weed in Canada), to former One Direction member Niall Horan’s shout out to Canada, there was no shortage of love for the host country. Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Reynolds even incorporated a fan’s Canadian flag into the ending of the band’s performance of “Thunder,” turning up the epic-meter on the closing note.

Even with all the huge performances and A-list presenters, the show still managed to squeeze in a number of awards. Drake was a double winner this year, taking home Most Buzzworthy Canadian and iHeartRadio Canadian Single of the Year for “One Dance.” Performers Lorde, Niall Horan, Imagine Dragons, and Camila Cabello all scored some hardware, with first time performers Arkells taking home Fan Fave Video for “Knocking At The Door.”
