Well, it looks like pollution is still the scariest thing in the Great Lakes. It’s official: The viral video of the alleged shark in Lake Ontario (above) was a hoax. The footage that captured us all hook, line and sinker was actually part of a marketing campaign for Shark Week on Discovery. As for the mysterious fish itself? It was an “incredibly life-like prosthetic model,” according to a press release by the network.

But just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, it turns out the idea of a shark in Lake Ontario might not be all that far-fetched. Or at least, that’s the premise behind Discovery’s In Search of Canada’s Rogue Shark, the series for which the viral video was created, which sets out to answer once and for all: Could sharks surface in the Great Lakes?

But for now, at least, we can all breathe a collective sigh of relief, because the only thing you’ll have to worry about while swimming in the Great Lakes are the three-eyed fish. Wait a second…
