Remember when mastering an Etch A Sketch was considered the height of intelligence? Ah, how times have changed. For today’s young bucks it’s all about STEAM-smarts (Science/Tech/Engineering/Art/Math), so building grey matter means creating their own R2-D2 android.

The littleBits Droid Inventor Kit comes with colour-coded electronic blocks that snap together with magnets. Once built, they can send their galactic sidekick on over 17 missions for good (drawing pictures) or evil (chasing the cat). Controlled by a special inventor app, there’s motion-sensor navigation, Star Wars-themed sound effects and multiple lighting options. Once they’ve mastered the basics, whippersnappers can customize the body using stuff around the house (if you see a milk carton sashaying across the floor, they’re probably bordering on genius). While it’s unlikely this new high tech buddy will do chores, your kid’s place at MIT is pretty much in the bag.
