The first day of school is a stressful time for students, teachers and parents. Nightmares leading up to the big day often run the gamut of showing up to school in your pajamas, not being able to find any classes, sitting alone at lunch, and the dreaded thought of being late for the first day. Even after we graduate, these dreams often seem to reappear around the end of August. Or is that just us?
For one student in Leeds, England, the actions of a kind bus driver ensured her nightmare didn’t become a reality.
Lynsey Jayes was taking the public bus on Monday morning around 7 AM when the bus driver pulled over. In a Facebook post that has now gone viral, Jayes says that the driver got out of the bus to check on a young girl, who looked to be approximately 11-years-old. The little girl was standing on the opposite side of the street and looked visibly distressed. As Jayes writes, the girl was standing on the wrong side of the road and had missed her bus, causing her to become upset at the possibility of being late for her first day of school.
In a heartwarming act, the driver turned off the bus and approached the girl, calming her down and assuring her that he would make sure she was on time for her first day. He then walked her over to a nearby store and called her a taxi. The driver waited with the little girl until the taxi arrived and then paid her fare.
When the driver returned to the bus 10 minutes later, he apologized to the customers for the delay. But as Jayes writes, no one seemed to mind. “Now that is a reason I don’t mind my bus running late for,” wrote Jayes.
Thanks to Jayes’ Facebook post, which has been shared almost 3,000 times, the bus driver is being applauded for his actions and hailed as a hero. A spokesperson for First West Yorkshire, the company that employs the driver, released a statement saying “We are delighted with the actions of our driver, who has shown exceptional customer awareness and consideration for this young girl, who was clearly very upset.
The spokesperson also thanked Jayes for “…highlighting our driver’s actions and to the many customers and other members of the public for their kind comments.”
