Over 110,000 Southern Californians have had to evacuate their homes this week to escape the wide-spread wildfires that many are calling a metaphor for 2017 as a whole. As of Thursday morning 96,000 acres of forest in two concentrated locations in the state were approximately five per cent contained. The fires have been raging since Monday and a combination of dry weather (the area is currently sitting at 10 per cent humidity) and the high-speed Santa Ana winds (which have reached hurricane speed in some places) have made it almost impossible for fire fighters to combat. The Brush Fire Index on Wednesday reported the risk at 296 (a score of 162 is considered “extreme”).

Yesterday, the flames of one of the fires hit the Los Angeles area, prompting large-scale evacuations of the highly-populated city. Wealth and fame won’t help you when you’re up against a wall of flame. Several celebrities were forced to leave their homes including Chrissy Teigen, husband John Legend and Chelsea Handler.

Despite evacuations and school closures, some people are still trying to go about their lives. Several highways have been closed, but drivers have posted videos and pictures of the flames from their commutes into work.

The winds don’t look like they’ll be dying down at all within the next day, meaning the fires will remain difficult to contain. Firefighters from across the state of California were called in earlier in the week and today more from other parts of the country arrived. In such a dire situation, people are taking comfort in the little good deeds and happy moments. Like this man rescuing a bunny that he saw on the side of the highway.
