Sometimes, you’ve got to ask in order to receive. Which is why college student Jill Young recently sent out a tweet with a festive request: “All I Want For Christmas is for my Dad’s hotel carpet instagram to go viral,” she wrote, adding in a link to his totally dad-like Insta account of hotel room carpets from his travels around the globe.

The size of Jill’s Twitter audience isn’t comparable to Jennifer Lawrence‘s or anything — currently, she has a modest 694 followers — but the internet is a funny place, and in less than 48 hours, her tweet went viral and so did her pa’s Instagram account, @myhotelcarpet.
Three days ago, Jill’s dad, Bill, had just 86 followers. Two days later, it spiked to 68,300. Today, just three days since Jill’s initial tweet, Bill’s collection of wacky rug snaps was at 405,000 followers and counting. So instead of uploading flooring photos for family and friends, he’s got a big audience to entertain. Talk about becoming Instafamous.
“He’s actually had the account since, like, 2015 but has never really actively tried to gain followers or anything,” Jill said in an interview with PopSugar.
Bill’s most recent post (which is a picture of the carpet at a Marriott) is pretty telling of how shocked he is by this new onslaught of fans. It has over 123,000 likes in not even 24 hours!
This week has been #CRAZY !! I found this pic from my last trip at the newly remodeled @laxmarriott . Concierge lounge was awesome for domestic hotel. I’ve gotta keep this thing going. #THANKYOU to all my new followers! – – #iliketheaquatones #beginningoftripsonotjetlaggedyet #carpetdad #carpetkid #moretocome #ihavealongtripnextweek #myphonealmostmelted #hadtoturnoffnotificationssoididntgetthrownoutofclass #travel @gulfstreamaero
“He’s always supported me in my dreams of being an actor, and it means a lot to me that I can support him in some way, too — even if it’s through an Instagram account,” she said.
Until Bill starts posting more fresh content, fans will have to find satisfaction in browsing his past posts, which include gems like this one, which is from The Adolphus Hotel in Dallas:
A Hilton in Japan:
And one from the Crowne Plaza in Hanover, Germany:
Since Bill’s growing popularity, the father-daughter duo have now got their eyes on bigger goals: The Ellen Show. Jill has promised that if the internet can get them on the talk show, her dad will perform “a dramatic slam poem about hotel carpet,” which admittedly sounds pretty awesome.
So, if all you want for Christmas is for your very own account to go viral, just send out a tweet! Who knows, maybe you’ll wake up with half a million followers in the morning.
