The first string of arrests have finally been made following the high profile robbery of Kim Kardashian West. In total, 17 people were arrested Monday morning by French police after months of investigation following the October 2016 event.
The robbery took place while Kardashian West was in town for Paris Fashion Week. After excusing her security detail to accompany her sisters to a dance club, Kim was alone in her hotel room when she was tied up, gagged and held at gun point by two armed robbers. Three additional robbers had managed to detain the doorman, while the two suspects in Kardashian West’s room threatened her and made off with $10.5 million US in jewelry.
The reality star was left physically unharmed but understandably traumatized by the event, something she addresses in the first trailer for the upcoming season of Keeping Up With The Kardashians. Visibly shaken and crying, Kim tells her sisters, “They’re going to shoot me in the back. There’s no way out.”
Using DNA left at the crime scene, as well as DNA found on a piece of jewelry belonging to Kardashian West found on a street near the hotel, French police have arrested 17 suspects they believe to be connected to the robbery. Many of the suspects, ranging in age from 23 to 73, are known to police and had their DNA already in the French criminal system.
Police in France had tapped the phones of those they believed were involved in the robbery over the past few weeks and discovered that the gang was planning a meeting with potential buyers for the jewelry. Monday’s raids took place in three areas, including Paris, Le Raincy and Vincennes. Investigators now have 96 hours to hold the 17 suspects and question them before they must either be charged or released.
According to US Weekly, Kardashian West will be asked to watch a video of the robbers in hopes she’ll be able to identify her attackers.
At the time of the robbery, Kardashian West’s two children were in New York, as was her husband Kanye West, who was mid-concert when he received news of the robbery and abruptly ended the show to be with his wife.
Kardashian West has stayed out of the limelight since the robbery, only returning to social media last week with a handful of new selfies and family photos.
The aftermath of the robbery as well as West’s recent hospital stint for exhaustion are expected to play a large role in the upcoming season of Keeping Up With The Kardashians.
The new season of Keeping Up With The Kardashians premieres on E! this March.
