Most of the worst celebrity outfits this week come courtesy of a couple major events with very different dress codes: The Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards is the place for fun, flouncy and joyful looks; while South By Southwest film festival gives stars an opportunity to dress a little more casual than other more formal film fests.
Stars like Charlize Theron took it so casual it got boring, while Mandy Moore, Katie Holmes and Heidi Klum opted for gowns that, though completely different, have one thing in common: they just don’t work. Somewhere between Theron’s basic LBD and Klum’s would-be superhero outfit is where we would’ve liked to have seen these stars take their red-carpet style this week.
Luckily for us and this list, however, they didn’t. Scroll through for 17 great examples of what not to wear on your next big night out.
When gorgeous gals wear below average gowns
Joanna KrupaPolish-American actress Joanna Krupa walked the red in a shiny black dress that looked like an oil spill, and the sheer ruffles that line the shoulders and arms remind us of some kind of sea creature impacted by the spill. And what’s up with the long sash on the right side? We’d have loved to see the star in a simple black mini instead.Getty Images
Becky GBecky looks pretty fierce, and her confidence is almost selling us on this ensemble. The top is cool, the jacket around the elbows is very Rihanna, and the white looks great against her skin tone, but those high waisted balloon pants are nowhere near the same level of casual-cool as the rest of this outfit.Getty Images
Katie HolmesWhen your skin tone has natural pink tones, pulling off a frock in the same colour can be tricky. Katie Holmes’ velvet and silk number proves this. Not to mention, the length is incredibly awkward hitting at the ankles. Next time, let’s opt for a different hue, Kate.Getty Images
Abby Lee MillerAbby might be able to bring out the best in her dancers on Dance Moms, but this shirt isn’t bringing out the best in her. Not. At. All. Mixed animal prints can be tricky, and the combination on this blouse just looks jarring. This is a teachable moment…Getty Images
Alli SimpsonOh dear. There is such a disconnect between the way-too-casual tracksuit, the perfectly fine white heels, and most of all, the tiny tiara. As the uber-posh Mark Francis once said on Made In Chelsea, “If you don’t have a family tiara, you don’t wear one.”Getty Images
Ari GraynorUgh, so close! If Ari would just take off the denim shirt, her white dress would strike the perfect balance between chilled out and swanky. Unfortunately, that dang shirt automatically adds, like, a dozen points to the casual side, throwing this outfit off its equilibrium.Getty Images
Candace Cameron BureThe Kids’ Choice Awards are all about fun, playful looks, so Candace did a great job choosing a fun romper for the occasion. Unfortunately, the asymmetrical neckline is more confusing than interesting. It just seems like she couldn’t decide if she wanted it strapless or not. You’ve gotta choose, Candace.Getty Images
Charlize TheronThis dress really isn’t that bad, but HELLO, this is Charlize Theron, and she has no business wearing a middle of the road LBD. A single lock of her hair outshines this dress. With the number of designers who’d scramble to get her to wear their clothes, she should be able to find something more exciting.Getty Images
Francesca EastwoodWhen it comes to notable film festivals, South By Southwest has a more casual dress code than others. However, Francesca Eastwood has gone just a little too casual by seemingly not making any attempt to dress up whatsoever. And by the way: yes, her father is exactly who you think it is.Getty Images
Heidi KlumHeidi Klum is a stunner no matter what she wears — her epic Halloween party costumes have taught us that much — but the colour-blocked gown that the model donned this week was lackluster at best. We’re getting Picasso vibes, and not in a good way. The cut-outs are oddly placed, and the juxtaposition of navy, orange and cream is too jarring.Getty Images
Jordana BrewsterJordana looks very boho-chic, but the Kids’ Choice Awards should be about youthful, fun looks. This would be great for a brunch or an upscale backyard barbeque, but it doesn’t have the punch of personality that we saw so many others bring to the Kids’ Choice orange carpet.Getty Images
Maia MitchellThis super slouchy suede outfit looks like the most boring item in a Yeezy fashion show. Like Robert Munsch’s Paper Bag Princess, we think Maia looks gorgeous in absolutely everything, but that doesn’t mean we think she should actually start wearing paper bags for clothes.Getty Images
Mandy MooreMandy’s dress presents us with a dilemma: without the black part it would be a more cohesive, elegant look, but there’s a possibility the red by itself would look a little cliché. Considering it isn’t hitting the mark as is, we think it would be worth it to find out.Getty Images
Micaela Von TurkovichThis outfit is an amalgamation of past trends. The leopard boots are very early 2000s, the top would fit into the gym class scene in Clueless, and the star jeans with massive holes had their brief time to shine in 2014. On the bright side, she doesn’t have to worry about her knees getting too warm.Getty Images
Miranda CosgroveMiranda has managed to go overboard with this pattern. This specific visual would look great on wallpaper, but it doesn’t fit the bill on this dress. The small floral print and cut doesn’t flatter her like it should.Getty Images
Nikki BellaWWE star Nikki Bella’s style is usually very sexy, but with just enough class. We were kind of shocked to see her in this bland black dress. Even the mesh overlay on the skirt can’t save it from being forgettable. Luckily, she later changed into an outfit that was a little more Nikki when she joined her boyfriend John Cena on stage.Getty Images
Noah CyrusIt’s cool to see Noah in some lighter tones, and we are all about the girl power, but those positives don’t cancel out the fact that this is just a t-shirt tucked into a crushed velvet skirt. Maybe if the tee was made from a more sophisticated fabric than just cotton, we could get back on the praise train.Getty Images
