We’ve all been there: a night of drinking brings out your insatiable hunger, and only the greasiest of meals will hit the spot.

That was probably Alex Bowen’s state of mind when he entered a local Waffle House, a 24-hour diner in South Carolina, to search for some good eats in the middle of the night last week. Unfortunately for Bowen, who had had a few drinks with his buddies beforehand, there was no one around to take his order.

So he did what any good Samaritan would do, and waited about 10 minutes before hopping behind the counter and whipping up a double Texas bacon cheese steak melt himself. A late night snack of champions, if I do say so myself.

Naturally, Bowen captured the whole thing on social media while he made his meal to-go, and even cleaned up after himself when he was finished. He eventually found the sole employee on-site to be asleep, but let him be (after snapping a photo) and returned later to pay for his meal.

Obviously, when you post something like this and it goes viral, the restaurant in question is going to find out, but this story has a somewhat happy ending. From the sound of things, the tired employee got to keep his job (he only faced a week-long suspension according to ABC News), and the popular restaurant is now looking to retain Bowen among their ranks of secret shoppers.

It’s hard to say how “secret” he’ll be given the fact that his face has gone viral, but hey — when your favourite late-night spot offers you free food, why wouldn’t you take them up on it? Texas cheesesteaks for everyone, y’all.

To anyone else thinking of pulling such a stunt at home, the restaurant is definitely advising against it, warning that people without the proper training could be seriously hurt in a professional kitchen like that.

Sure, sure. It makes sense, but sometimes when you just need a greasy sandwich, and you’re in a pinch, you just do what you gotta do.

Good for you, Alex Bowen. You may just be my new drunken hero.
