Ladies: The shape of your face may explain why you’re single

No seriously, a new study claims this to be true.

Turns out the age-old saying “a face only a mother could love” holds a lot more truth than we initially thought. According to a study done in collaboration by the Anthony Little of the University of Stirling and Benedict Jones from the University of Glasgow, men prefer flings with women that have feminine facial features like small jaws and full cheeks. To conduct this survey, researchers asked several hundred straight men to rate composite photographs of women’s faces and asked them—at face value, literally—which face they would choose for long- or short-term relationships.

Each face—of both Asian and European descent—featured two versions; one being more feminine and the other more masculine. Naturally, men rated women with more feminine features higher for a fling, especially among men who were already in a steady relationship (hypothetical CHEATERS). But, to the surprise of many, men actually rated the more masculine face as the preferred long-term choice.

“If his partner cheats on him, a man risks raising a child which is not his own,” explained the authors. Which is to say men will choose a less attractive woman out of fear that a more attractive woman will probably cheat on them. This argument has also been made by straight women, who are not innocent in lowering their standards either. So ladies (and gents, I suppose) if you’re considered good-looking, you may actually have a harder time finding someone who’s in it for the long haul, because the less attractive have this s%&t on lock.
