When a parent’s criticism goes too far

Growing up, weight was always an issue. Correction — being overweight. I know I wasn’t the smallest girl around but looking back, I can also acknowledge that I wasn’t as big as I thought I was. Or that my parents made me think I was. Yes, I had very critical parents who would comment all the time that I was a big girl. But I also come from a family that liked to eat and liked me to eat, so therein lies the conundrum.

I remember one instance, after my mom’s latest jab at my weight, I asked her half-seriously, “Would you rather me stick my finger down my throat and throw up?” Her response was “No” — but not before a couple seconds of hesitation passed, as she looked at me, seemingly considering it. Blech. Honestly, looking back, I’m a little surprised I didn’t suffer from any eating disorders.

My parents and I live thousands and thousands of miles apart, but whenever I see them, I see how obsessed with weight they still are. My dad thinks if he eats crap but not a lot of it, then he will stay skinny. And maybe, but what he doesn’t get is that it’s not healthy, not that it matters. He is more concerned with outward appearances anyway. He also criticizes my mother if she is enjoying something delicious that isn’t particularly good for her, but will also bring her treats home. Weird, right? My mother is like me and loves to eat but for a while there, she was a little bit lazy to counterbalance that love of food with any sort of exercise (she has since started working out). Personally, I’ve gotten a firm grasp of my weight issues and have found a happy medium of eating food I like, just not a ton of it, and exercising as well.

I hope Rob Kardashian finds a way to get healthy too — even if it’s without his mom’s and sisters’ help.

Star magazine is reporting that Kris Jenner has told her son that he is an embarrassment to the family and has had enough of him not doing anything about his weight gain. Kris reportedly attacked Rob, saying his fitness struggles have made him lose out on “business opportunities” and demanded that he go to “fat camp” to fix everything.

“Rob is fatter than ever, and Kris finally flat out told him he’s an embarrassment to the family,” a source told Star (via Daily Mail). “She called him a fat slob and said he’s losing out on business opportunities because no one wants someone as huge as him representing their products. She’s told him that if he wants to continue to be an active part of their family, he’s going to attend a camp and lose the weight once and for all.”

Rob had reportedly tried a weight loss camp not too long ago but the results weren’t impressive enough for Kris. “When he came back, he didn’t look very different from when he left and Kris was not happy.”

In a recent episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, Rob revealed, “I’ve been the most unhappiest person for about a year and a half and it’s very, very easy to fall off the wagon. I need to literally dedicate my entire life to my fitness.”

His sisters allegedly support their mom. “They’re embarrassed to be photographed with him and bully him for being fat,” the source said. “They also tease him by leaving cakes and cookies around to tempt him.” You’d think Khloe would be a little more sensitive considering Kris has always been critical of her appearance as well. Jerks.

Other sources claim Rob has relocated to Florida to get away from his attention-loving family. Last month, an insider explained, “He finally realised he needs to focus on himself and not do things the way his sisters do. He feels he needs a clean break. Rob feels like his family can’t see anything beyond the spotlight. But he wants more for himself than fame.”

Rob has reportedly gained more than 60 pounds after his split from Rita Ora last year. He has also been unhappy about his mom’s separation from stepdad Bruce Jenner, as well as the end of Khloe’s marriage to Lamar Odom, who Rob was quite close with.

“Kris tried to get him a weight-loss deal and pushed him to promote a hair-loss supplement,” said the source. “He feels like the family abandoned him when he needed them most. For him, life is more than just a business deal.”

Ugh, poor Rob. It’s easy to forget about him because he tries to stay out of the harsh spotlight the rest of the Kardashians so crave. I hope he finds a way to get healthy — but on his terms. And when Kris tries to get him back into the fold, he tells her to shove off.
