As with anything posted on the internet, It’s sometimes hard to tell whether a letter that goes viral is genuine or fake.
Though the online jury is still out about the validity of a grandfather’s letter to his closed-minded daughter, the sentiments expressed in the handwritten epistle are too good not to share.
According to Gawker, the letter first appeared on the Facebook page of FCKH8, a group dedicated to combating the hatred toward gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered individuals.
In the letter, a grandfather slams his daughter for disowning her gay son.
“Kicking Chad out of your house simply because he told you he was gay is the real ‘abomination’ here,” he writes. “A parent disowning her child is what goes ‘against nature.’”
He then goes on to upbraid her for her closed-minded and incorrect views regarding homosexuality, explaining that Chad was born this way and her rejection of him is inexcusable.
What makes this letter stand out in a growing sea of supportive letters from family members to gay children is that, in addition to the intelligence and passion displayed by the letter writer, we haven’t seen that many examples from the grandparent generation – an age group that was raised to take a very different attitude toward homosexuality.
The words on the page are more proof that nothing, not age, creed, or culture, is a barrier to engaging with one another through our basic humanity.
