When it came to her relationship with long-time, common-law partner Ian MacLachlan, Karley Seabrook’s philosophy was always along the lines of “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

“The divorce rate is super high. Everything is going really good, like it’s working well, so why do we need to get married?” the B.C. woman told CTV news.

“I just became disillusioned with the whole institution of marriage and the idea of that scared me.”

MacLachlan was more enthusiastic than Seabrook about the idea of tying the knot, but respected her decision.

“I felt a little bit disappointed,” he admitted.

But after the 38-year-old mother of two was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer in December of 2012, she changed her mind about getting hitched.

“(Ian) was just there for me, no matter how I was. And that made me…love him even more, and I was like of course, what am I waiting for?”

Instead of revealing her change of heart to MacLachlan, Seabrook surprised her love with a lavish wedding on his 50th birthday on February 1st. Seabrook managed to keep the party under wraps during the full year it took to plan. The couple’s young children, Makai (9) and Monet (7) were also in on it.

“Even the night before, he didn’t know what was happening,” Seabrook told The Province.

“She was stunning,” MacLachlan said of his new bride. “She’s stunning all the time — but in a wedding dress? It was something I had dreamed about.”
