We’ve spent enough time enduring this long, freezing winter. When you can’t remember the last time you saw the sun shine, or when you left work before the sky was pitch black, it’s about the same time you realize you’re due for a simple little pick me up. There’s some truth to the old adage that “the simple things” are what are important in life. Sometimes, it’s these little things that put a smile on your face on an otherwise dreary day. When I feel the blues creeping in, these are my favourite little pick me ups.

Cook up a new playlist
If your playlist hasn’t changed since last summer, you’re more than overdue for some new music. Plus, stale music is apt to get you down. Ask your friends for their top new tracks and get downloading. I’ve recently added Ellie Goulding’s Anything Could Happen to my morning mix, and everything ASAP Rocky/Kendrick Lamar-related to the rest of my library. And I secretly have been listening to Rihanna’s Stay. On repeat. All day. Don’t judge!

Get baking
I’m no Betty Crocker or Martha Stewart, but there’s something to be said for that warm nesting feeling when you get in the kitchen, toss on an apron and whip up something sweet. Maybe it’s an apple pie from scratch, or super easy instant muffins. Whichever method you prefer, pulling a warm, melt-in-your-mouth treat out of the oven will not only satisfy your sugar craving, you’ll feel pretty proud for nailing the recipe. Or maybe inspired to try it again if the cake totally caved in…

A little home loving
You may not have the budget to do this one on the regular, but a little décor update for your home – whether it’s a new piece of art, fresh bedding, new bath towels, a fancy cheese board for the kitchen – will go a long way.

A pop of colour
When I was a little girl, my mom used to say that even in the middle of a recession, ladies would line up at lipstick counters for a little inexpensive indulgence. Whether there’s any truth to this or not, I have recently grown to support the notion. Lipstick as a small indulgence is pure genius! For anywhere between $5 and $50, you can get colour crazy – reds, pinks, coral and more. I’m a bit new to the whole lipstick thing, but I’m slowly seeing how addictive a little pop of colour can be!
