It’s a new year! Get out there this weekend and make the most of it!

[CENTRAL]

Skating in Toronto! With winter in full effect and the thermometer perfect for outdoor rinks, don your winter jacket, snow pants, mittens and toque and head to one of Toronto’s many free, public, outdoor skating rinks. There’s downtown Toronto’s Nathan Phillips Square; the Harbourfront Natrel Rink; Mississauga Celebration Square or Evergreen Brickworks. Don’t forget to pack your hot chocolate!

This weekend in Ottawa, don’t miss the award-winning Billy Elliot: The Musical happening at Ottawa’s National Arts Centre for a short stint from Jan 1 to 6, 2013 only. With music by Elton John, the musical follows the story of a young boy looking to make his dreams come true – out of the boxing rink and into ballet class.

It’s the last weekend to experience the Telus Fire on Ice celebration happening in Montreal’s Old Port this Saturday, Jan 5th. Catch the spectacular fireworks show over the St. Lawrence while enjoying the free, outdoor skating rink.

Starting this weekend from Jan 5 through Mar 24, 2013, Quebec’s Hotel de Glace opens! The only ice hotel in North America that is made completely out of snow and ice, the hotel is built anew each year. Stop in for a cocktail, served in a glass made of ice, or stop by for a look at this marvel!

[WEST COAST]

This weekend in Calgary, the month-long High Performance Rodeo takes place from Jan 3 to Feb 3. As Calgary’s International Festival of the Arts, the event is the largest of its kind in western Canada and features theatre, music, dance, comedy and interdisciplinary art from local, national and international performers.

In Vancouver, it’s the last week to check out Cirque du Soleil’s Amaluna at Concord Pacific Place. This Cirque du Soleil presentation takes the audience to the mysterious island ruled by goddesses and their queen, Prospera, whose daughter falls in love with a young man.

[EAST COAST}

Don’t miss ELF: The Musical as it closes this weekend Jan 6 in Halifax at the Neptune Theatre. The story, based on the movie, ELF, tells the story of Buddy the elf who embarks on a journey to find his family in New York City.

Enjoy the finer things in life this weekend in St. John’s at the Newman Wine Vaults. The Finer Things takes place 8pm on Jan 4 and 5 and features a selection of fine wine tasting by wine educator Tom Beckett of Beckett on Wine. Between tastings, as part of the Shakespeare by the Sea Festival, intimate performances of The Curious Case in the Colony: A Sherlock Holmes Adventure, will take place.

This is the last weekend to enjoy the 2012-13 Wintertide Holiday Festival with its events, activities happening across the city of Charlotte, including PEI Rocket Home Games and UPEI Panther Home Games this weekend.
