If we’ve learned anything from watching The Amazing Race (Thursdays at 10 p.m. on CTV) all of these years, it’s that any leg following a non-elimination leg is usually pretty freaking tough. So when the remaining teams travelled from Italy to Greece on Thursday night we knew the competition was going to be stiff.
What we didn’t count on was a crazy Double U-Turn that royally screwed Liz and Mike, who already had to face an extra challenge for coming in last. Still, Brooke and Scott dug that knife into their backs pretty hard by putting their photo on the board, despite promising to never U-Turn the team. As a result, Liz and Mike just couldn’t catch up to the night’s other U-Turned team, #TeamFun, and they were sent packing.
In light of their exit, here are five new travel tips we learned from watching them on the show.
1. Respect local customs… and animals
The teams donkey-ed around in the Detour, in which everyone either had to deliver milk to local cheese makers in Greece and collect a present for the bride at a wedding, or else climb a ridiculous flight of stairs and carry down a baby goat for the groom. Liz and Mike, who had to do both challenges in light of the U-Turn, made the terrible mistake of forgetting to bring down the second goat and had to go up those stairs all over again. It was just one of many mistakes that cost them the game.
2. Learn to read a map
If there’s one fatal flaw Liz and Mike had as a team, it was their inability to read a map. Every time there was a self-drive challenge on the show they got completely lost. Of all the reasons these two came in last (and Thursday night was their third time coming in last), driving and getting lost usually was one of them.
3. Listen to your travel buddy
We all know the importance of speaking less and listening more. Well that proves especially true in stressful situations. When Liz tried telling Mike to turn around after they missed the turn, he failed to listen and just kept on driving, saying she didn’t know how to read a map. Maybe so, but his stubbornness was yet another reason they lost all of that time in the end.
4. Respect history
When in Greece… run around a former Olympic stadium in Athens. Or learn a pretty cool march of the guards. Or… well we don’t know what else the teams might have got up to in between those crazy challenges. But one thing we do know is that despite the stressful situations Mike and Liz found themselves in on Thursday night, they had some pretty cool history lessons to take in along the way. And isn’t that a huge point of travelling in the first place?
5. Be grateful
Okay so things didn’t quite work out for Liz and Mike in the end, but they did manage to make a new friendship. And that in itself was a pretty sweet thing. Mike referred to Liz as his new little sister (they love each other and fight like siblings, after all), which means that both of these people get to take something away from the race that they didn’t have before. Well, that and the experience of travelling nine crazy legs. You really can’t discount that.
