In the land of Shonda, having nice things never lasts. At least, that’s definitely the case when it comes to relationships on every Shonda Rimes series. The one that has been breaking our hearts the longest is Grey’s Anatomy, which goes into its 14th season starting Thursday, September 28 at 8 p.m. ET on CTV. When the series returns, the only solid couple left on the show looks like they may be heading for splitsville. This is why we can’t have nice things.

Actor Jason George has played Dr. Ben Warren on Grey’s since Season 6, becoming a series regular in Season 12. According to The Hollywood Reporter, George has just been confirmed as a series regular for the upcoming spin-off series centered around firefighters, possibly the same men and women who helped fight the fire in the Season 13 finale of Grey’s Anatomy.

There still aren’t many details about the new series, including its title, but we do know that the 10 episode season will spin off from an episode of Grey’s Anatomy in Season 14. George will remain a series regular on Grey’s until the new series begins at an unconfirmed date, but then what?

More precisely, what does this mean for Ben and his wife, Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson)? Where is this fire station located? Is it just down the street from Grey Sloan Memorial or are we talking a cross-country long-distance situation? Is Miranda going to have to raise Little Tuck alone? Will Ben join the series after completing his residency or will he finally be kicked out of the program for delivering yet another baby outside of a hospital room (so far we have on a kitchen table and in a hallway)? Is Grey’s Anatomy about to break up the only couple who understand the importance of communication in a relationship? Why, Shonda, WHY?!

We’d like to think that Ben’s move to a fire station may help his marriage with Miranda, since she wouldn’t be his boss anymore. But if history has taught us anything, it’s that when two roads diverge, Grey’s takes the one that will make us cry.

As per usual, Rhimes and co. are dealing with the exit of one character by ushering in four new ones. Actor Abigail Spencer has been recast as Owen Hunt’s dead-but-not-really sister Megan, who was rescued at the end of Season 13. Stefania Spampinato will play DeLuca’s sister Carina, a new doctor joining the Grey Sloan Memorial staff. This season will also see the return of Kim Raver as Dr. Teddy Altman as well as Glee star Matthew Morrison, who appeared in one episode last season as Jo’s abusive ex-husband Paul Stadler.

The Season 14 premiere of Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursday, September 28 at 8 p.m. ET on CTV.
