There are many ways to ring in the New Year, from hitting up the hottest club to staying cozy in your jammies in front of the fireplace. But TV host Maria Menounos celebrated it in a pretty unique way.

Not only did Menounos get married on New Year’s Eve, she did it on live television in the middle of Times Square.

The TV personality co-hosted Fox’s New Year’s Eve broadcast with Steve Harvey, and it was during the pre-planning phase of the event that the idea of a live wedding first came up. Menounos told People Magazine that a producer brought up the idea of having a wedding during the broadcast and jokingly suggested Menounos and her fiancé Kevin Undergaro, who proposed to Menounos on The Howard Stern Show in 2016.

“[The producer] said, ‘Unless you and Kevin want to get married.’ And I was like, ‘Ha, ha, no.’ I was nervous but I got in the car and kept thinking about it and I was like, ‘Wait, this really is kind of perfect,” Menounos said.

Undergaro had already been planning a surprise wedding on The Howard Stern Show, but quickly shifted course when Menounos suggested New Year’s Eve.

The couple, who have been together for 20 years, have endured a challenging few years, with Menounos being diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2017. Thankfully, the tumor was removed and found to be benign. But Menounos has still been busy caring for her mother, who has stage four brain cancer.

“I really truly believe that it’s taken us this long [to get married] because of the pressures of putting a wedding together,” said Menounos. “I’ve always wanted it to be super intimate and even though this is the opposite, we can only invite our immediate family, so the pressure of who to invite is gone. This was just so perfect.”

The couple only told a small handful of friends and family about their wedding plans, with Menounos’ parents present on stage during the ceremony. As for the dress, Menounos only had a few weeks to find a gown that she not only loved, but could change into quickly in a shipping container in the middle of Times Square.

The freezing temperatures in New York City on New Year’s Eve made things even more difficult, which plummeted to nine degrees Fahrenheit or -13 degrees Celsius. But like a pro, Menounos toughed out the cold weather and looked stunning in her Pronovias lace gown.

As for the honeymoon, the couple has yet to announce their plans, but considering how their engagement and wedding took place in front of a crowd, we’re hoping for something big.

Check out the video below to see how Menounous’ outlook on life changed after learning she had a brain tumor.
