It’s safe to say that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are a modern couple and when it comes to the way the royals have done things in the past, they’ve broken protocol many times over. It’s about adapting to the times — and it’s more than welcome, if you ask us.
A source told Us Weekly that Meghan is hoping her mother, Doria Ragland, will walk her down the aisle on May 19 instead of her father, Thomas Markle.
“With the wedding, they both want to do things their way,” said the insider. “While they will always be mindful of traditions and the views of their elders, the day is ultimately about them and what they want to do.”
The source added: “The day of the wedding itself will certainly hold a few unconventional surprises. Don’t expect a royal wedding by numbers. They want to involve their friends and family as much in as much as possible throughout the day.”
To be honest, this sounds like every couple getting married. Sure, a bride is traditionally walked down the aisle by her father — if he is alive — on her big day, but with all the unique family units nowadays, a mother or stepfather or grandfather or best friend walking beside the bride or groom to meet their future life partner shouldn’t have anyone clutching their pearls — even royal ones.
Plus, Meghan is clearly closer to her mother than her father. And Thomas, who has never been photographed with his daughter and has been described as “reclusive,” simply might not want that kind of attention. Not that it matters; some people (ahem, Megs’ half-sibs) will likely see it as a sign of dishonour towards her father, but considering how big a stage their wedding will be, it’s safe to say that Meghan and Harry are going to discuss everything at length and make sure no disrespect is shown to either side.
If you remember, when it was announced on Nov. 27 that the prince had proposed, Meghan’s parents issued a joint statement through the palace. If Doria and Thomas can do that, perhaps they’ll come together once again to escort their daughter down the aisle. Now that is a move everyone can get behind.
