Hundreds of meteorites rain down on the Earth every year. We take a look at the most destructive scenarios.

The exploding meteorite that injured almost 1,000 in Russia is not the first to strike the Earth. Hundreds of space rocks rain down on us every year, but most of them burn up in the atmosphere before making contact with the ground. Russia’s meteor was an exception. It generated sonic waves that were able to smash windows and tear gaping holes in buildings. Below is a look at the many other destructive meteor strikes from around the world:
