We all make mistakes. Every day. This week for example, I sent my kid to preschool with remnants of the previous night’s dinner still smudged on his face. Oh and I bailed so bad on an icy sidewalk that I looked like Luis Suarez within 50-feet of a soccer net. Fortunately, none of this was caught on video.
Also fortunately, many of the mistakes made by pro athletes and others are very much caught on video and uploaded to the Internet for us all to point and laugh at. Aside from porn, cat videos and online banking, watching people embarrass themselves is probably next on the Things The Internet Is For list. To that end, every Friday from now on we’ll be bringing you a couple video highlights from the world of sports that aim to make you laugh, cringe or simply thank the online video gods that no one follows you around with a camera.
First up this week is Australian Open semifinalist Li Na, who beat Maria Sharapova 6-2, 6-2 to get in the Grand Slam final. She may be playing for the big trophy on Saturday, but earlier this week during the quarterfinals she delivered what must be the worst serve in pro tennis history. Or at least tied for that title. This thing looks like my Wii serves when I think I can play tennis and hold a beer at the same time.
Next up is former Olympic gold medal snowboarder Ross Rebagliati. Fifteen years after earning global fame for winning, then losing, then winning back a snowboarding gold medal thanks to a positive drug test for marijuana, Rebagliati is trying to open a chain of medicinal marijuana storefronts—called, ahem, Ross Gold—across the country, starting in his hometown of Whistler, BC. Not sure where to start with this. It’s the perfect idea… for 1998. After those ’98 Nagano Games, the Rebagliati brand was on fire—from getting on Jay Leno to people in Vancouver selling bumper stickers that said, “Smoke a Fatty for Rebagliati” (I bought one). But now? Too little too late, Ross. Oh and Health Canada is basically saying ‘No effing way’ already.
