Talk about a wardrobe malfunction.
For the last 40 years, Dale Irby has sported the same outfit in every school picture. Like, EVERY school picture. If you actually take the entire stack of photos and flip through them, all that changes is Irby’s face and glasses. The disco-style polyester shirt and beige-coloured V-neck sweater vest are practically his formal uniform.
‘For me, routine is important,’ he told the Toronto Star.
Indeed it is, as it guided him into a series of fashion faux pas. The first time Irby wore the same outfit, it was a total accident. The gym teacher didn’t have much of a wardrobe in the ’70s, usually opting to wear coaching shorts for most of the day. So when he noticed he had rocked the same groovy outfit for two years in a row, his face turned red with embarrassment.
But that’s when his wife Cathy stepped in and turned the humiliating affair into a running gag. She dared him to do it again, and he did. Soon three became 5, which eventually became 40. Now the once famous outfit is faded, and dotted with a few holes.
The 63-year-old recently retired from his long-time teaching job, and now he says it’s finally time to hang up the old sweater vest once and for all.
But there won’t ever be a photo to prove it.
