Negative comments about a person’s body or looks can have a lasting impact, especially when the comment is made during someone’s formative teen years. For Kylie Jenner, the 20-year-old is still feeling the effects of getting some not so nice feedback after her first kiss.

In 2014, fans of the reality series Keeping up with the Kardashians noticed that the youngest Jenner seemed to be going through some physical transformations. During a May 2015 episode, Jenner finally admitted that she had received lip injections. Now Jenner is once again talking about the cosmetic procedure and what motivated her to make a drastic change to her face.

During Sunday’s episode of Life of Kylie, Jenner revealed that it was a remark made by one of the first boys she ever kissed that spawned her insecurity over the size of her lips.

“I was 15 and I was insecure about my lips. I have really small lips. And it was like one of my first kisses and a guy was like, ‘I didn’t think you would be a good kisser because you have such small lips,” Kylie said during this week’s episode. “But I took that really hard. Just when a guy you like says that, I don’t know, it just really affected me.”

This isn’t the first time Kylie recounted this story. “It has been an insecurity of mine all my life,” she told Complex in 2016, recalling the boy’s small lips/good kisser comment. “It was so rude. From then on, I just felt like I saw guys staring at my lips. I felt like no one wanted to kiss me.”

Jenner tried to compensate by making her lips appear larger with makeup, but eventually she opted for injections.

“I just didn’t feel desirable or pretty. I really wanted bigger lips,” she said. “I would overline my lips with lip liner just to create the illusion of bigger lips. And then finally I was like this lip liner isn’t doing it. [I] ended up getting my lips done.”

It’s sad to hear that Jenner felt she needed to change her appearance because of someone else’s comment, but it also makes the makeup mogul much more relatable. Jenner’s story is a good reminder that regardless of fame or fortune, everyone feels insecure. All comments, regardless of how insignificant they may seem at the time, can have a lasting effect on a person, so choose your words carefully. Also, if someone criticizes your lips after your first kiss, break up with them immediately.
