It can be argued that Ryan Reynolds can do just about anything — but this is asking a lot. The actor who is best known for his snark, who can pull off action (Deadpool), drama (Life), romance (The Proposal) and comedy (Van Wilder, his Twitter feed) has been tapped to play Pikachu in the live-action Pokémon adaptation and, frankly, there are no words. (We totally understand if you’ve left this story to check your calendars but let us reassure you, it’s not April Fools Day.)

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Reynolds will star alongside Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom actor Justice Smith and Big Little LiesKathryn Newton. Reynolds will play the title role in the film, Detective Pikachu, which tells the tale of a teen (Smith) whose father is kidnapped, leading him to partner up with Pikachu to find his father and uncover the mystery behind his disappearance. They’re soon joined by a journalist (Newton) who helps them on their mission.

Alex Hirsch (Gravity Falls) and Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) wrote the latest draft of the script, while Rob Letterman (Goosebumps) is directing the project, due to start shooting mid-January in London.

THR adds that Reynolds’ role will be “motion capture in nature,” so that’s a tad reassuring. And while it might sound like the weirdest project ever, fans are both excited and perplexed.

Somewhere Blake Lively is laughing her ass off. Or, at the very least, her and Ryan’s daughters are celebrating because maybe he’s doing this for them. But, come on, he’s already got The Croods and Turbo for his kid cred. Isn’t that enough? Knowing Ryan, though, this’ll be a box office hit.
