Pretty Little Liars star Shay Mitchell welcomed her first child in October 2019 and has been vocal about the struggles of being a new parent, both before and after the baby arrives. The Canadian actress is now opening up about how she got through Postpartum Depression and it was thanks to a little help from her friends.Mitchell  spoke to US Weekly about how she was able to her navigate through the difficult days, weeks and months after welcoming her daughter Atlas with boyfriend Matte Babel. Mitchell credits her close group of friends and family as the reason she was able to move through the physical, emotional and mental marathon that comes with becoming a new mom. “I feel like definitely having the support system around you,” Mitchell said when asked how she thinks new moms can manage life with a new baby. Mitchell continued saying, “Because I think especially having a newborn, you’re going up and down with your emotions and dealing with all new things that I’ve never had to deal with before.”

You’re perfect to them, you know? And just that kind of constant reminder. Being a new mom, it’s all about supporting each other,” she said.Mitchell has already been subjected to the harsh lens placed on new mothers. The actress found herself being mom-shamed in October when she and Babel were spotted attending Drake’s birthday party three days after announcing the birth of Atlas. “It concerns me that people are so quick to pass judgment on others, especially without knowing any facts, and behind the protection of the screen,” Mitchell told Vogue in November. “My daughter had been born for several weeks, and when Matte and I chose to take our night out, which was an hour and a half, it surprised me that people chose to be so reactive and aggressive and assume the absolute worst about us—and more so me.”Mitchell is all for moms supporting moms, telling Yahoo "I’m learning that while motherhood is the most incredible experience it’s not always easy and I know I can be really hard on myself sometimes. I often worry about being ‘good enough’ as a mom, and if I listen to myself for too long, it can take away from the joy of the moment. So, I’m striving to be kinder to myself and to try to see myself through my daughter’s eyes.”
