So Nicole Kidman is talking (a little bit) about Scientology. Of course I could be cynical and point out that Nic has a movie to promote—the one where she pees on Zac Effron—but in fairness, the former Mrs. Cruise has been pretty tight-lipped about the whole Tom thing over the years, where a lot of actresses would have blabbed. Big time.
In a new profile in The Hollywood Reporter, Kidman is informed that the breakup of her marriage is blamed on Scientology. “I bet it is,” the actress responds.
For those of you who haven’t been following all of this, the suggestion is that Tom’s church viewed his then-wife as a “suppressive,” meaning someone who wasn’t on board with their holy mission. According to some sources, the Sci brass did their best to brainwash Cruise against his wife and eventually he left her.
More than ten years later, Kidman will neither confirm nor deny these allegations, which, if you ask me, makes her a very classy broad. And a good mom.
“I’ve chosen not to speak publicly about Scientology,” she explains in the same article. “I have two children who are Scientologists—Connor and Isabella—and I utterly respect their beliefs.”
It’s interesting how Nicole’s behaviour compares to the recent dramatics surrounding Katie Holmes’ escape from Sci-town. The latter allegedly ended her marriage largely to protect her young daughter from the very church that Nicole was willing to let her kids be a part of. Not that she necessarily had much choice, but she did at some point make certain decisions surrounding the future of her two kids. Namely, that Tom could be in charge.
I wonder if Connor and Bella appreciate their mom’s “respect” or if they (like the Sci leaders supposedly dictate), view her as a suppressive personality—someone to be avoided. As far as I know, the last time Kidman was photographed with her first two children was 2006, which doesn’t mean that’s the last time they saw each other, but it’s certainly a little odd. My guess is most of this respect is coming from afar.
