The Ex Presidents will ride again, but no longer under the direction of Kathryn Bigelow. The 1991 beloved cult classic Point Break, which follows an FBI agent (Keanu Reeves) infiltrating a bank robbing surf gang lead by the bro-dacious Bodhi (Patrick Swayze), is set for a reboot helmed by Ericson Core. 100% pure adrenaline! Well, maybe.
Nursed at the bosom of 2001′s The Fast and the Furious as a cinematographer, Core went on to make his feature film debut with the 2006 feel-good football film, Invincible. The former suggests an eye for fast-paced action, but it will be no easy feat transitioning from street racing to surfing. Still, whether or not the reboot will even feature wave-riding remains up in the air. According to a press release, the film will be set in the “world of international extreme sports.” Will BMX bikes replace surfboards? To quote Bodhi: “Life sure has a sick sense of humour, doesn’t it?” The FBI infiltration plot line, however, will remain.
Stepping into Bigelow’s shoes is no small feat, but what’s really plaguing us is who could replace the iconic cast of Reeves, Swayze, and Gary Busey. A troika of rad early-’90s masculinity, their casting was the anchor of the film: Reeves’ woodenness meshes with Swayze’s smooth swagger, which is all nicely topped off with Busey’s over-acting. To say nothing of Lorri Petty as Tyler. Androgynous yet sexy, she holds her own with the boys in the surf, and delivers the best line in the film: “Okay, too much testosterone around here for me.” We’re not anti-remake, exactly, but this one has a lot to live up to.
