If you’re like me and you’ve got a few hundred thousand dollars just languishing in a bank account somewhere and nothing to spend it on, then listen up: UK website Firebox is selling replica Iron Man suits in advance of the new Iron Man film being released early this May. They’re on sale for one day only and are expected to ship in time for the film’s premiere. The suits, which come in a wide range of sizes (38R to 52T), do cost a pretty penny, but when you consider this site’s well-reasoned claim that an Iron Man getup is the “only weapon you need” (like, ever), then you’re really looking at the purchase as an investment, rather than a impulse buy.
Firebox is asking £250,000 (about $386,650 in Canadian dollars) for the replica steel and carbon Mark XLVII (if you don’t have that kind of cash, there’s an “add to wishlist” button to increase the odds that a special someone with a bigger bank balance will see it and surprise you with a suit). The replicas are modelled after Tony Stark’s latest Iron Man armour (the movie version of the Mark XLVII is a red and gold number that features exciting new Extremis™ nanotechnology) and while Firebox’s ad doesn’t boast that their suits incorporate the Extremis option, they do offer “free delivery”—so read into that what you will.
What the site does promise is a nicely-equipped suit featuring a headset that “utilizes projected holographic technology,” a pair of “hand-mounted stabilization jets combined with the thigh-mounted flare development system provide optimum flight control… [and] cameras mounted on shoulders and wrists for improved flight-safety.” And they haven’t ignored the aesthetic aspects of the iconic red and gold suit, either. Firebox’s Mark XLVII looks nearly identical to the one we’ve seen in the trailers for Iron Man 3. It’s a good looking suit, and if it doesn’t get you a date to an opening night screening of the new movie, nothing will.
