The guys who brought you all those Scary Movies probably thought they had stumbled on to a whole new franchise opportunity when they conceived the idea for Disaster Movie (with a cast that included renowned thespians like Kim Kardashian, Carmen Electra, a Dr. Phil look-a-like, and that woman Nick Lachey married after he divorced Jessica Simpson, how could it not be a hit?). Sure, Date Movie and Epic Movie didn’t really take off, but
Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer had never heard of the law of diminishing returns third time’s the charm, right? Wrong. Disaster Movie is distinguished only by it’s ranking as the number one worst movie of all time according to the Internet Movie Database.
IMDb has published their Bottom 100—a list of the worst movies ever made as voted on by the website’s users. Disaster Movie (which should at least get credit for living up to its name) took the number one spot, but other notable big losers include the American-Idol-fuelled 2003 flop From Justin to Kelly. Someone (Fox studios) thought it would be a good idea to finance a romantic comedy/musical starring Idol contestants Kelly Clarkson and Justin Guarini in which the two non-actors meet and fall in love during Spring Break in Florida. According to The Wrap, the film won two very prestigious awards: the Governor’s Award for “Distinguished Under-Achievement in Choreography” and the “Worst ‘Musical’ of Our First 25 Years” award—courtesy of The Razzies, of course.
You’re probably lucky enough to have never heard of some of the films on the top ten list (below), and that’s for the best—Paris Hilton starred in two of them (Pledge This! and The Hottie & the Nottie which is, if you can believe it, a film constructed around Hilton’s “that’s hot” catchphrase). The films filling out the rest of the Bottom 100 are even more obscure. Ever hear of The Tony Blair Witch Project? What about Fat Slags (with such a charming name, it’s a wonder it wasn’t more of a hit)? Others you’ll recognize: remember when they’d greenlight any film based on an SNL skit? That’s how It’s Pat got made. Then there’s Gigli, the
relationship film that almost killed Ben Affleck’s career. Strangely though, the list also includes this unimpeachable gem. Go figure.
