We don’t want our noses to grow long with lies, so we’ll start off by noting at this point Robert Downey Jr. and Ben Stiller are only in talks to make a live-action Pinocchio. But even the idea is enough to get us excited, based on the fact the last time the pair worked together the result was 2008′s Tropic Thunder. In this satirical comedy (which Stiller directed and starred in), Downey Jr. played a delusional method actor who was so devoted to the war film he was making that he wore blackface. While the tale of a lonely woodcarver who makes a real boy out of a puppet is a very different genre, the clear ability for the two actors to collaborate suggests it could be a good project.
It’s been no fairy tale getting this film made. At one point, Tim Burton was in talks to direct, which is a logical choice given his past fantastical work. But it seems Burton wasn’t so on board with what Downey Jr. had in mind, as the Beetlejuice director eventually passed on the film when the producing team “decided to go in a different creative direction.”
And so, along came Stiller. According to Empire Online, the actors were both in attendance at CinemaCon and the Iron Man star ran the idea by Stiller. As we said, nothing’s confirmed, though we do know Downey Jr. will play the part of Geppetto. Maybe in addition to directing Stiller will play the part of Pinocchio, too?
