For months, we’ve been seeing shots of Oscar-winner Naomi Watts on the set of the biopic Diana. With her naturally blonde hair done up like the late princess’ and an excellent wardrobe department recreating Di’s iconic style, Watts looks perfect for the part. Of course, looking the part is only half the battle, and questions still remain regarding how the controversial royal figure will be portrayed. Will the biopic play up her charitable work? Her love affairs? Her troubled relationship with the press? The first look at the film doesn’t let on too much, but it does give a sense of what Diana will delve into.
Centering on Diana’s relationship with Dr. Hasnat Kahn (Naveen Andrews), the film unfolds over the last two years of the princess’ life. Kahn is generally said to have been Diana’s great love, but the media circus that dogged her was too much of a strain on the relationship and they eventually split.
The trailer uses loads of swelling music, suggesting, as was to be expected, that Diana is going to go for the heartstrings: a tale of a troubled life that ended far too soon. Diana doesn’t speak in the teaser, but is shown on red carpets, working at orphanages, and running away from the paparazzi. It all looks like the usual stuff of Lady Di’s lore, though the tagline of the biopic wants us to believe the film will go deeper: “The legend is never the full story.” Set for release later this year, we’ll have to wait and see if it lives up to that promise.
