It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Man of Steel breaking box office records! Zack Snyder’s hotly anticipated take on Superman’s origin story had people buying tickets faster than a speeding bullet this weekend, earning $113,080,000. That superhuman amount is the second highest gross of 2013, behind Iron Man 3, and the highest ever June opening. Way back in second was This is the End, the new comedy by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. Now You See Me worked more magic, holding on in the top three and seeing the smallest dip in ticket sales. Rounding out the top five were Fast & Furious 6 and The Purge.
Man of Steel $113,080,000
Man of Steel won at the box office, but it didn’t win over all critics. Reviews have been mixed, including our own, which says: “Zack Snyder drains Superman of his charm, humour, and personality.”
This is the End $20,500,000
Shot on a much smaller budget than your average summer blockbuster, This is the End has the potential to be another cult comedy from Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (who penned Superbad and Pineapple Express).
Now You See Me $10,320,000
Despite earning mixed reviews, this film about magicians has worked its magic on theatregoers.
Fast & Furious 6 $9,433,000
Sick of Fast 6 yet? No way! So far, the car racing action film is shaping up to be the best blockbuster of the summer.
The Purge $8,201,000
The big surprise last week was The Purge taking first at the box office. Interest waned pretty quickly, however, as the horror film dropped a whopping 76% in ticket sales.
