The moment has arrived: the first trailer for Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues has been released. Ever since Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell) appeared on Conan back in March 2012, confirming the long-awaited sequel, fans have been chomping at the bit to see what the San Diego Action News team will get up to next. Based on the trailer, it looks like Champ, Brian, Brick, and Ron are having a hard time adjusting to the 1980s and taking their shirts off a lot.
Director and co-writer Adam McKay hasn’t opened up about plot details, only alluding that the film will centre on the rise of Fox-style news reporting. The trailer starts off on this point, with a beleaguered looking Ron struggling to come to grips with a changing media landscape that no longer has a place for him. “In the ‘70s they were an elite unit,” says a dramatic voiceover. “And then they were gone.” Jumping ahead to the mid-‘80s, the old broadcast team is reunited when an exec decides to start a 24-hour news channel. Flanked by his loyal dog Baxter, Ron accepts the offer: “I’m gonna do the thing that God put Ron Burgundy on this earth to do: have salon quality hair and read the news.”
Set to Journey’s rousing crowd-pleaser “Don’t Stop Believin’,” it looks as though the film will deliver on what audiences want: more Ron, more shirtless Rudd, and more rivalries. This time, the San Diego news crew also faces an opponent in Jack Lime (James Marsden), a young and handsome anchor who is gunning for Ron’s chair.
After waiting a decade for a sequel, holding out until the Christmas release seems doable. Until then, you stay classy, San Diego.
