Christian Bale has officially declined to don his batsuit for DC’s upcoming Justice League movie—not that anyone has asked him to… yet. But Bale apparently decided to get ahead of the speculators by bowing out early, thereby leaving the press to continue to hound poor Henry Cavill about when we can expect to see the superhero squad of friends on the the big screen.
Early last May, reports surfaced that Bale would indeed do Batman again in a Zack Snyder/Christopher Nolan-produced Justice League movie, possibly directed by Man of Steel‘s Snyder, too (though the lukewarm reception of his Superman movie might have put Snyder out of the running to helm the superhero ensemble film). However, Bale, who’s currently promoting his latest movie, Out of the Furnace, with co-stars Woody Harrelson and Zoe Saldana, has now confirmed that he will not be back as the Dark Knight, no matter how long we might shine the bat-signal into the night sky.
“We were incredibly fortunate to get to make three [Batman movies]. That’s enough. Let’s not get greedy,” said Bale during a chat with Entertainment Weekly. “Chris [Nolan] always said he wanted to make it one film at a time. And we ended up sitting there looking at each other, saying ‘We’re about to make the third.’ We never really knew if we were going to get to be there, but if that was how it was going to be, this was where it should end as well.”
Bale says that he’s remained blissfully in the dark about the whole Justice League project. ”I have no information, no knowledge about anything. I’ve literally not had a conversation with a living soul. I understand that they may be making a Justice League movie, that’s it,” said the actor, adding that he’s happy to see the role go to someone new. “It’s a torch that should be handed from one actor to another. So I enjoy looking forward to what somebody else will come up with.”
While fans may be disappointed to learn that Bale won’t be back as Batman, directors of photography everywhere just breathed a collective sigh of relief.
