Robert Downey Jr. may not be a superhero scientist, but he does have one major thing in common with his Iron Man character, Tony Stark: both men are super, super rich. The star has topped this year’s Forbes list of Hollywood’s Highest-Paid Actors, earning an estimated $75 million over the last 12 months.
Forbes consults with Hollywood business types like producers, agents, and managers to try to figure out what the top stars in showbiz have earned since last summer—not that there was any need to go digging around in Downey Jr.’s recycling bin for pay stubs. The actor freely admits to having been paid $50 million for his role in Marvel’s superhero ensemble film, The Avengers. “Isn’t that crazy? They’re so pissed. I can’t believe it. I’m what’s known as a strategic cost,” said the actor in an interview with GQ. Forbes reports that RDJ earned even more than Avengers writer/director Joss Whedon.
Coming in a good $15 million behind Downey Jr. is Channing Tatum, who earned $60 million last year—not too shabby for a relative newcomer. Forbes credits Tatum’s business savvy for his huge financial success. The actor teamed with director Steven Soderbergh to finance their hit film, Magic Mike, turning a profit of $160 million.
Third place goes to Hugh Jackman, who balances his X-Men superhero role with parts in big-budget (and big box office) musicals like the Oscar-winning Les Misérables. Jackman made a respectable $55 million last year, and if you ask me, he earned every penny of it. That Wolverine haircut is ridiculous.
