Holy crazy rumours, Batman! The Bruce Wane universe has been fraught with all kinds of news these past few months, first with the announcement of Zack Snyder's Batman vs. Superman and then the confirmation that Ben Affleck would be the next Dark Knight. That last tidbit sent the Internet into overdrive, as fan boards and blogs exploded with dissent over the casting choice. (Hey give him a chance, he might just win you over!) But if Batfleck seemed contentious, Justin Bieber playing Robin turned out to be downright controversial.
Last Friday, the pop star posted a photo on Instagram of himself and what appeared to be awatermarked script of Snyder's Superman vs. Batman. That would have been enough to strike fear into the hearts of Bat-fans, but Bieber took it one step further, adding the hasthag "#robin?" Bieber's online activity generally creates minor seismic activity, so understandably this set off a tsunami.Yet unlike most of what the Biebs does, this time the reactions weren't positive. Many of the comments on the photo are negative and The Hollywood Reporter even quotes one “fan” as saying: "Batman would be ruined forever." (Didn't people say the same thing about Chris O’Donnell in Batman Forever?)
However, the Stratford, Ontario native was pulling everyone's leg. It turns out that on the same day as Insta-Robingate, Bieber had tweeted: "Off to do something funny or…die : )," which is most likely a reference to the comedy website Funny or Die. Though this hasn’t been confirmed, it's safe to assume that Bieber won't be playing Robin on the big screen, but in a web-based sketch sometime soon. Batman, it seems, is safe yet again.
