Last week rapper Lil Wayne was rushed to hospital after suffering seizures. TMZ reported on Friday that things were so bad that the Young Money star was read his last rites. What followed was a flurry of denials from those close to Wayne, claiming that he was fine. TMZ removed the report of last rites, but are now claiming that Wayne is still in ICU.

Several sources close to the rapper were quick to refute the celebrity news site’s claim that he was at death’s door. Rapper Mack Maine tweeted: “Wayne is alive and well! We watching the Syracuse game…thanks for the prayers and concern. he will update you all soon.”

Wayne himself reportedly tweeted a little later: “I’m good everybody. Thx for the prayers and love.” The validity of this tweet is being questioned, as @startuptechguy, a tech guy (?) questioned the latitude and longitude of the origins of the tweet, saying it didn’t match that of Cedars Sinai (34.0766385, -118.37954589999998) in LA.

What’s weird is the amount of denial that is going around. If Wayne is ok, why is he still in ICU? It has been reported that it was an overdose of codeine, a drug Wayne has struggled with in the past, that caused the seizures in the first place. His stomach had to be pumped 3 times to get it out of his system.

If Wayne is still not out of the woods, why give the impression that he’s about to go home, as Birdman has suggested: “My son is in good spirit..feelin much betta…be home soon.” Is it some kind of machismo thing? Like, there’s no way a tough guy like Wayne could be in this much medical trouble? Or is it a money thing, like people will stop buying Lil Wayne records if he’s seen as weak, and therefore records made by those on his label?

It would seem to me that, if your friend was in dire straights, you’d stay off the iPhone and protect his privacy as he and his family deal with this crisis, not turn it into a media feeding frenzy. Unless, of course, you wanted to get your name mentioned on TMZ.
