Just when you thought that will.i.am, front man for The Black Eyed Peas, couldn’t possibly lose more respect from anyone, he has proved us all wrong. The singer who just released his long-delayed solo album #willpower (yes, the title is a hashtag) just got busted for stealing one of the tracks on the album from a Russian DJ.
Will’s song Let’s Go, that features the ever classy Chris Brown, steals its entire backing track from a song called Rebound by a Russian DJ and producer named DJ Arty. On his Twitter account, DJ Arty says neither Will.i.am or any of his management have secured licensing to use the music. Sketchy.
According to will.i.am, the whole stealing thing and lack of licensing issue was *cough cough* accidental.
“Arty is a dope producer so I wrote this song to ‘Rebound’ this last year. I got in touch with Arty and showed it to him, did a different version to it ’cause I asked him to make it newer ’cause I don’t just wanna take your song and rap over it,” he said. “We preferred writing over and using the original ‘Rebound.’ Something happened and the clearance… hopefully we resolved the issue.”
Sounds fishy. You can bet your butt that DJ Arty is going to make some cash.
