It’s a very sad day for soap fans. Jeanne Cooper, who played the legendary character of Katherine Chancellor on The Young and the Restless, passed away on Wednesday morning at the age of 84.
Her son, Corbin Bernsen, broke the news of her passing to fans via Twitter Wednesday afternoon, writing, “Mom passed this morning. She was in peace and without fear. U all have been incredible in your love. In her name share it 2 day with others.”
Cooper was a beloved face to fans of Y&R, the No. 1 soap in Canada. She helmed the role of Katherine for almost 40 years, and joined the show only six months after it debuted in 1973.
The actress was born on Oct. 25, 1928 in California, and through her career appeared in a ton of TV classics including The Untouchables, Rawhide, Bonanza, The Twilight Zone and Perry Mason. She is survived by her three children, Corbin, Collin and Caren — who was with her when she passed, and eight grandchildren.
