Believe it or not, but according to Dana Scully herself, there may very well be a third X-Files movie, penned by creator Chris Carter, in the works.

While at a Toronto press conference linked to her upcoming guest arc on NBC’s Hannibal, Anderson dispelled previous rumours that talks of continuing the X-Files film franchise have forever ceased.

“From my understanding, Chris was writing [the third movie] for a while,” the actress told reporters. “I don’t know what level of his inbox that’s in right now.”

Anderson added that The X-Files is something that she, co-star David Duchovny and Carter all “hope to revisit,” although she would prefer to play Agent Scully to Duchovny’s Agent Fox Mulder in “a feature.”

Duchovny, who now stars on Californication for Showtime, shared a similarly positive sentiment during a recent interview with Jay Leno. “We’re always on board,” he told Leno of a possible X-Files 3. “I’ll be Fox Mulder forever.”

He added, then addressing fans, “You know, you want to write to Fox. Get them going.”

While we won’t likely see The X-Files back on the small screen anytime soon, Anderson says it’s presence is still lurking around.

“It was No. 1,” she says.  “If you look at the way that it was lit, the way that it was shot, the production values … the horror aspect of it, the unsolved crimes. I mean, the amount of other shows that have tried to copy it over the last twenty years!”

Hannibal debuts on NBC and City Thursday, April 4 at 10 p.m. ET.
