New Girl is going to come to a swift end this season. A Taylor Swift end.
There’s been an obvious “Love Story” brewing between country pop superstar Swift and Fox’s popular Tuesday night comedy for quite some time, with lead character Jess (Zooey Deschanel) listening “22″ after a recent break-up and Schmidt telling Cece that he was going through a “Taylor Swift range of emotions.” So, when the show asked her to guest on the Season 2 finale, she obviously said — insert surprised face here! — “Yes.”
According to EW, Swift will hit up the New Girl set next week to film a cameo. She’s going to play character named Elaine, who is said to be an “important guest” at Cece’s (Hannah Simone) wedding.
While no other specific details have been released, we can’t help but wonder if Elaine is one of Shivrang’s (Satya Bhabha) angry, bitter ex-girlfriends. Perhaps she wrote a song about him (titled “Put a ‘Rang on It,” obvs) and attempts to perform it while Cece’s walking down the aisle? After all, crashing weddings is the type of thing Swifty is known to both do and sing about. And we bet she’d have a partner in crime in still-lovesick Schmidt (Max Greenfield).
If Elaine and Schmidt manage to hold their peace throughout Cece’s ceremony, maybe she and Jess can have a twee hair-/dress-off? Both gals love their gloriously eye-skimming bangs and frocks that would be at home on girl just entering Grade 3. The question is, who loves them the most? (Advice to Elaine: Don’t mess with the Jess!)
Whatever goes down in the finale, currently dubbed “Winston’s Birthday (Part 2),” this guest part marks Swift’s first scripted TV comedy role. Her previous acting experience includes a Saturday Night Live hosting stint, a voice role in The Lorax film, a hammy part opposite then-boyfriend Taylor Lautner in Valentine’s Day and a cameo on CSI.
Swift is just one of many stars to a make brief, but memorable appearance on New Girl this year. This week’s new episode, “Chicago,” had Justified’s Margo Martindale and The League‘s Nick Kroll playing Nick’s (Jake Johnson) mother and brother, respectively. And earlier on in the season, Jamie Lee Curtis and Rob Reiner appeared as Jess’s parents.
Swift appearance aside, New Girl is on quite the roll these days. The show not only received a Season 3 order from Fox, but is also getting a Thursday night try-out alongside The Mindy Project next week. Should the episode perform well, the show could easily move to one of primetime’s most highly-rated nights next fall.
Catch the next episode of New Girl Thursday, April 4 at 9 p.m. ET on City/Fox.
