The on-site doctor who worked on the French version of Survivor has committed suicide following the death of a contestant.
Broadcaster TF1 made the announcement Tuesday, saying Thierry Costa, 38, took his own life in Cambodia. It was less than a month ago that Costa came under fire over the death of contestant Gerald Babin, 25, who suffered a heart attack and passed away following a tug-of-war contest during the first day of filming of Koh-Lanta.
Production was shut down and the season was cancelled.
Costa and his production company, Adventure Line Productions, were accused of negligence after it was reported Babin was denied medical attention for almost 10 minutes so that production on the series wouldn’t be interrupted.
“These last few days my name has been smeared in the media. Unjust accusations and unfair assumptions were uttered against me,” read part of his two-page, handwritten note. “I am sure I treated Gerald with respect as a patient and not as a contestant.”
