Given his eccentric, enigmatic behaviour, Gary Busey has probably heard himself referred to as a space cadet on many occasions. Who knew he’d interpret that label so literally?

Busey, who currently stars on The Celebrity Apprentice: All Stars, appeared in a brief skit on Thursday’s edition of Jimmy Kimmel Live! in which he offered himself up for a planned expedition to Mars in 2023.

In the audition reel featured below, Busey dons a cape, foil hat and Mars t-shirt while convincingly explaining why he’s the best candidate for the mission: “I’m going to Mars because I’ve been there before.”

While the clip was no doubt made in jest, it’s impossible to know for sure because, well … it’s Gary Busey.

As Kimmel explained before rolling Busey’s audition reel, Mars One, a non-profit organization, is looking to send four astronauts on a one-way journey to Mars in 2023. It’s currently accepting applications and will make its final selections this summer, through some sort of previously announced reality competition.

The successful candidates will go through seven years of training to prepare for the mission and even live in a replicated Mars colony for several months. Sadly, when they eventually land on the red planet, there will be no returning home. As Kimmel explains, “Once you go to Mars for any length of time, you can’t come back to Earth because you wouldn’t be able to withstand our higher gravity.”

Here is the entire clip:

Jimmy Kimmel Live! airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. ET on ABC and at midnight on Citytv.
