Idle hands lead to Idol rumours these days. At least that’s the lesson to be learned from the plethora of stories coming out of this current, almost-wrapped season of the reality show.

Now that feud stories between judges Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj have been put to bed, outlets report that sluggish ratings forced producers to take a good, hard look at its current roster of talent, and come up with the idea of replacing Carey with last year’s judge, Jennifer Lopez.

According to TMZ and The Hollywood Reporter, JLo was approached by Fox executives and asked to return to the show for the rest of the season. Sources from the network told the website that these execs wanted Carey out in an effort to stop the “hemorrhaging” ratings.

Perhaps it’s worth noting that last week’s ratings were indeed the worst in the show’s 12-season history.

When Carey found out about the talks, she reportedly threatened legal action, which turned talks with Lopez into a deal to get her to appear and perform on the upcoming May 16 finale, instead. Fox rebutted the rumours in a response to The Hollywood Reporter, claiming that these latest replacement stories were indeed just rumours.

American Idol airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET on CTV/Fox and on Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on CTV Two/Fox.
