“Live from Québec, it’s Saturday night!”
That’s the phrase you could be hearing, now that Québec is gearing up to tackle another part of the comedy game.
The Just for Laughs originators are trying their hand at a familiar format, with the 2014 debut of Saturday Night Live Québec.
In a press release on Wednesday, CNL Telbec announced that SNL makes its Québec debut with two 90-minute specials airing on Feb. 8 and Mar. 22, 2014 on Télé Québec. The broadcasts will be hosted by French comedians Louis-José Houde and Stéphane Rousseau.
“We are very proud to be presenting this event programming”, says Dominique Chaloult, programming and digital media director of Télé Québec. “SNL Québec will most assuredly rally Quebecers around a dynamic viewing experience.”
Like the original SNL format, SNL Québec will be recorded in front of a live studio audience with celebrity guest hosts, a house band, and feature sketches, musical guests, a Weekend Update news desk, and surprise cameos. The cast will be made up of six main members performing the sketches.
Contributors hail from Québec’s École nationale de l’humour, or comedy school for anyone lacking basic French, along with the school’s director, Louise Richer. According to the release, writing credits will go to the “best of the up-and-coming” in comedy alongside seasoned television writers in creating both original pieces as well as taking parts from SNL’s past 38-years of sketches.
Saturday Night Live airs Saturdays at 11:30 p.m. ET on NBC and Global. This week’s host is Kristen Wiig with Vampire Weekend, and next week’s season finale has Ben Affleck and Kanye West as host and musical guest.
