Self care can mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people. Facing each and every single day can present a whole slew of challenges for someone like me who deals with anxiety, especially in social situations.

While there really is no ‘quick fix’ solution for coping, one thing that has helped me throughout the years is forming beauty rituals. These simple (and low-cost) rituals have always made me feel more confident in myself and helped prepare me to face the day in the most relaxing way possible.

So it’s time to put on a few groovy tunes, tie your hair up in a messy top knot and get ready to indulge in some sweet pampering time. Here are some low-cost beauty rituals that will help you honour your mind, body and soul.

Take a bubble bath using a LUSH cosmetics bath bomb

Price: $7.95

All sweet, no sour: make your unicorn dreams come true. #🦄 #bathgoals

A post shared by Lush Cosmetics North America (@lushcosmetics) on

Taking a bath with a bath bomb is less about the cleansing experience and more about the sensory process. From the moment you drop the bomb into the water, you’ll be hit with a beautiful array of fragrances and colour swirls. All of the stress and anxiety you may have felt will be slowly melted away just like that. If you’re feeling kind of fancy, we suggest trying out the Golden Egg bath bomb melt which is full of cocoa butter and leaves your skin with a beautiful shimmer.

Create your own DIY spa at home with Gold Apothecary

Price: $15.00

If your face is like mine, prone to acne and full of stubborn blackheads, then you will want to try facial steaming. While at first it can seem kind of intimidating, the water vapor loosens dirt and contaminants that are clogging pores which induces sweating, which further flushes out pores. When I’m creating my own at-home spa, I always reach for my Gold Apothecary herbal steam facial mixed with seven herbs and flowers including peppermint and rose. Use this steam for 15 minutes, once a week, and your face will feel fresh as ever.

Essential oils from Saje Wellness for on the go self care

Price: $59.95

For many looking for a more holistic approach to their beauty and wellness regimen, the pocket pack from Saje Wellness just might be for you. The aromatherapy kit offers five 6mL roller bottles of some of their popular blends: peppermint halo, immune, eater’s digest, pain release and stress release. Packed into a zip pouch, small enough for any purse – I carry the pouch with me everywhere so that I can apply and reapply during the day, or as needed. Using all-natural ingredients and real essential oils, these remedies really do work.

Take the ultimate face mask selfie with masks from The Face Shop

Price: $3.00

When in doubt, give the gift of Face Masks! Buy any 10 Real Nature face masks, and receive 5 free 💆

A post shared by THE FACE SHOP CANADA Official (@thefaceshopcanada) on

Face masks (everything from sheet, clay, peel-off, thermal, cream – you name it) are the ultimate in self care. If you take your skincare game as seriously as I do, then you know that face masks (and the selfie to go with it) are very on trend right now. Through my very serious investigation, I’ve been able to hunt down some of the best masks and you need to go to The Face Shop which specializes in Korean beauty products. The masks sells for $3.00 each and come pre-packed with all the their natural processing system (including ‘flavours’ like aloe or green tea, to name a few) to lay atop your face. The sheet contains a serum with moisturizing and nourishing properties and then viola! Beautiful skin and an awesome Instagram moment.

The perfect red lip at the Bite Beauty Lip Lab Toronto

Price: $55 for 1 custom lipstick or $80 for 2 custom lipsticks

“Loving my custom colors from Bite Beauty Lip Lab New York!! Such a fun experience!!” @debbyfashionomics

A post shared by Bite Beauty (@bitebeauty) on

It has been scientifically proven that wearing red lipstick makes us happier. I know that when I’m having a particularly tough day, wearing red lipstick can give me a whole new sense of self and, dare I say it, sense of empowerment. This is why Torontonians must head down to the Bite Beauty Lab on Queen Street West to make and create their very own red power shade. Walking into the Lip Lab is a sensory utopia, with hundreds of pigments in every shade possible everywhere. But when you meet with one of the Lip Lab Artist, they will guide you through the process of making your very own bold and brave shade and you’ll walk out a whole new woman.
