It’s a shame nightclubs are no longer a thing (for the next little while at least), because dance floors and discos the world over have just been given an epic gift from the internet gods. Perhaps you heard Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s “speaking moistly” slip of the tongue the other day during his daily COVID-19 updates to the nation. Trudeau quite often stumbles over his words when he’s thinking on his feet, but this one definitely landed on the wrong side of cringeworthy. Ugh, no one should ever say the word “moistly.” Gah! We just said it again! Well an ingenius internet troll decided to set his gaffe to music and the results are iconic.Created by user “Anonymotif,” Trudeau’s press conference was transformed into an autotuned treatment called – you guessed it – “Speaking Moistly” with an upbeat melody.
There is a lot to unpack in this song. The clever jump edits. The way JT’s voice just lends so perfectly to song. How “wash our hands, cough into our elbows” somehow work as lyrics. But our favourite part is most definitely, hands down, the extreme close-up on the sign language interpreter in the corner pausing with a strange look on her face. That interpreter is ALL OF US right now.As the music abruptly ends, we are treated to JT’s post-moist reflection of what he’s just said, “What a terrible image.” Hmm. Terrible image? Yes. Chart-topping banger? Also yes.The song is short, only a one minute and 46 seconds in length, but it packs in the laughs and the groove so seamlessly, it’s sure to hit the top of the Canadian dance charts pronto. At press time, the video has over 725,000 views on YouTube, and this track slaps so hard, the comments are overwhelmingly positive.“Official song of the summer!” one Youtuber commented, while another praised Anonymotif with “doing the Lord’s work.” On Twitter, one user hailed it as “catchy, gross, and responsible all at the same time!” while another quipped, “Killing me moistly with his song!”Thank you for your service Anonymotif.
