Like the BB and CC creams that came after them, the makeup primer was the buzz-worthy product a few years ago. Primers first hit the market about a decade ago but were mostly used by professional makeup artists on set or for brides hoping to keep their makeup looking fresh through their big day. According to the New York Times, makeup primers have become more popular with your average makeup wearer as more and more women discover how lovely it is not to worry about having to powder their noses midday.

What is a primer:
• It’s the beauty equivalent of the product you apply to your walls before painting (that doesn’t sound very glamorous but it’s the same idea)
• A makeup primer helps to visually correct common skin imperfections, it:
- minimizes pores
- helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
- reduces shine
- mattifies skin
• Many primers also boast other skincare benefits, for instance there are anti-aging primers, moisturizing primers, skin brightening primers, etc.
• There are also specific primers for lashes, eyelids and lips

How to use a primer:
• Apply moisturizer and let it dry
• Apply primer with a sponge, brush or your fingers
• Use is sparingly on the areas that need it most — wherever you notice your makeup wears off by the end of the day or where you could use some smoothing — usually around the nose, under the eyes and on your chin

Why you need a makeup primer
• OR apply a thin layer over your whole face
• Let the primer dry
• Follow with foundation and concealer as usual
• Be sure to wash your face at the end of the day to ensure that pores are clean
