Whether you’re worried about a few silver strands or a head full of grey hair, scientists in the United States have found the root cause. Curious? Your hair is actually bleaching itself from the inside out, and like most scientific finds, this one was an accident.

FASEB (Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology) was investigating the skin disease vitiligo when they stumbled upon these findings. Greying hair, as it turns out, is a sign of hydrogen peroxide building up in the hair follicle. The study suggests that grey hair could be reversed with the help of an antioxidant formula which would enable “re-pigmentation” of the strands.

During the study on a mixed group of over 2,400 patients with vitiligo, scientists found that after being treated with a drug called pdeudocatalase (which was activated by sunlight), the pigment of the skin and eyelashes came back.

The team, which was made up of experts from Bradford University in the UK and E.M. Arndt University in Germany, found that the discolouration of pigmentation found in vitiligo patients was down to oxidative stress on the skin. While the study is focused on the a cure for the skin disease, this isn’t a bad start for banishing grey hair.

According to the journal’s editor-in-chief Gerald Weissman, the same type of science can be used to reverse greying hair and even stop the process entirely. For those of you who hate your naturally Lady Gaga-like silver locks, you may want to keep a close eye on this one.

“For generations, numerous remedies have been concocted to hide grey hair, but now, for the first time, an actual treatment that gets to the root of the problem has been developed,” says Weissman.

We think grey hair looks gorgeous. To prove it, here are a few of our fav stars wearing gorgeous grey tresses::

Nicole Richie, left, totally pulled off grey hair at the Met Gala… though we wouldn’t have teamed it with that dark lip. Kelly Osbourne, right, has long since flaunted silver locks with a hint of punk-colour streaked in.

It’s no surprise that Lady Gaga, left, has tried almost every hair colour on the planet, but she does look gorgeous in grey. Model master, Jay Manuel, right, is always so perfectly groomed including every strand of his silver hair.

And of course, how could we forget, the infamous Karl Lagerfield (top) always lets his grey ponytail pop against his all black outfits.

Would you get rid of your grey locks and take your natural hair colour back if you could?
