I’ve been seeing nude all over New York Fashion Week. From lipstick and nails to that gorgeous jumpsuit Vanessa Hudgens wore to the Jenny Pakcham show, nude is on trend for 2013.
But how do you wear nude without looking, well, naked? Let these stylish celebrities inspire you.
My favourite looks from the video are Kristen Stewart and Beyoncé. The shade of nude wasn’t too close to their natural skin colour making it stand out on the starlets. Katy Perry and Taylor Momsen wore dresses that were too close to their skin tone, making them look washed out.
A good rule to follow is always wear nude that is either two shades lighter or two shades darker than your natural skin colour. With so many variations of nude out there, from peaches and pinks to greys and browns, it’s easy to find the perfect hue for you.
Taylor Swift’s look
Taylor Swift went for the super light nude look at the NRJ Music Awards in France. The champagne colour of her Elie Saab dress is a couple shades lighter than her skin tone which is a flattering look on the young singer.
This Rare London sequin bodycon dress is a similar shade to Swift’s and it looks great with these Charlotte Russe metallic velvet T-strap heels.
Giuliana Rancic’s look
Not everyone loved Giuliana Rancic’s look at the Grammy’s this year, but I think it’s lovely. This shade of nude is a lot darker than Swift’s Elie Saab dress, and suits the majority of skin tones.
This darker nude dress from Yoox is similar in colour to Rancic’s and has a similar high neckline but is a much more wearable length – I mean how often do you have the opportunity to wear a long gown? And the fun thing with short nude dresses is that you can pair them with bright fun heels like these Nine West sandals and Aldo ankle strap heels.
Gabourey Sidibe’s look
Remember that whole controversy about Michelle Obama wearing a “nude strapless gown”? The first lady wore a Naeem Khan design which he described as a “sterling-silver sequin, abstract floral, nude strapless gown,” which would be fine except the dress was similar to the colour of champagne – clearly not the same shade as Obama’s skin. Discussions then emerged about whether the fashion industry is racist.
A year after the controversy actress Gabourey Sidibe stepped out in a nude dress and she looked great. I especially love that she paired the dress with snake print heels.
This Mauro Grifoni dress is similar to Sidibe’s and would look cute with a skinny belt. Copy her snake print heels and get these awesome Diane Von Furstenberg sandals.
